Art Sanctuary, founded in North Philadelphia, uses the power of black art to transform individuals, unite groups of people, and enrich, and draw inspiration from the inner city. Board and staff members have worked hard for twelve years to create a learning culture adequate to support the mission. We present, produce, commission, create, and teach artistic excellence. We hustle to pay for it. The art must be life-giving, not comfortable and happy-happy, but enriching to a community long hobbled by scarcity and injustice. The Asian Arts Initiative

The Asian Arts Initiative is a community-based arts center in Philadelphia that engages artists and everyday people to create art that explores the diverse experiences of Asian Americans, addresses our social context, and imagines and effects positive community change. We are working toward a just and joyous world where all people, regardless of their racial and class backgrounds, are able to view and create art that reflects their lives and concerns.

Created in response to community concerns about racial tension, the Asian Arts Initiative began programming in May 1993 with Philadelphia’s first-ever Asian American Arts Festival: “Live Traditions/Contemporary Issues” at the Painted Bride Art Center. The Asian Arts Initiative has since become a community arts center that offers performances, exhibitions, workshops, and training for artists, youth and adults who share our commitment to community-based arts.

The Painted Bride

The Painted Bride Art Center collaborates with emerging and established artists to create, produce and present innovative work that affirms the intrinsic value of all cultures and celebrates the transformative power of the arts.

The Bride is especially committed to Philadelphia-based artists and to linking them to community groups and issues. The Bride’s core programs include world premieres, substantial commissioning support, and new work that challenges artists to further develop their work while also daring audiences to experience these artistic voices.

Headlong Dance Theater

Headlong Dance Theater’s mission is to create and perform new and visionary works of dance theater that use the entire body including the voice, the face, and the mind; to create accessible dances that are relevant beyond traditional dance audiences; to bring audiences closer to dance by performing informally, in nontraditional venues, and for free; to develop and propagate training techniques that bridge dance and theater and empower performers to be co-creators; to provide mentoring and leadership in the local and national arts communities; and to dance our way into the blind spots of our strange times.

Volunteers and interns are accepted in the spring and summer. In the Fall, internships are provided only to students attending Headlong Performance Institute (HPI), a program accredited through Bryn Mawr. Girls Rock Philly

Girls Rock Philly (GRP) is an initiative to bring Philadelphia a girls-only, week-long summer day camp serving junior rockers ages 9-17. Led by a team of all female instructors & band coaches, girls in the program learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, make their own band merchandise, discover other women in rock & finesse their on-stage jump kicks.

Want to get involved? They need the year-round help of reliable, dedicated people to make camp happen. Some positions require musical experience, but there are many positions that do not. All positions are available to female & female-identifying volunteers, with opportunities available for men as well!

Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre

The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre was founded as The Red Heel Theatre in 1989, initially focusing on classic works of English theatre. In 1993, Carmen Khan became the Artistic Director of Red Heel and in 1996 focused the company’s efforts on the works of Shakespeare, renaming it The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival. Since that time, The Festival has produced 30 plays, reached nearly 30,000 High School students and nearly 70,000 adult audience members. They now have several programs for adults and students including a lecture series featuring world-renowned Shakespeare Scholars, Shakespeare School Tour which also tours in schools, and a Classical Acting Academy providing early actors with intense classical training culminating in a free Shakespeare play for the public.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is a folk art environment, gallery space, and nonprofit organization that showcases the work of mosaicist Isaiah Zagar. Located at the site of Zagar’s largest public mosaic installation, the Magic Gardens includes a fully mosaiced indoor gallery and a massive outdoor labyrinthine mosaic sculpture.

You can support Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens by donating your time and energy. PMG is most interested in volunteers who can contribute their time on a regular basis, such as weekly, bi-monthly or monthly. They also hire Garden Guides.

Volunteer and internship opportunities include:

Visitor Services – Greet and educate visitors about Isaiah Zagar’s techniques and the history of the Magic Gardens
Grounds and Garden Maintenance – Assist with daily operations of the Gardens; may include tending the flower garden, organizing the office, and some light cleaning.
Special Events – Set up and break down of concerts, fundraisers, film screenings, and more.
Writing and Research
Photography and Graphic Design

Volunteers can be as involved as they want to be at Magic Gardens; they are open to ideas and eager to meet you! All volunteers must schedule a time to meet with PMG staff prior to their first volunteer shift. Interested volunteers should email esmith@phillymagicgardens.org with their interests and background.
