The Volunteer Committees for The Philadelphia Orchestra are comprised of dynamic and devoted Orchestra enthusiasts who are dedicated to supporting the Orchestra in such areas as audience development, educational programs, fundraising, community relations, and special events. Volunteers have sponsored concerts, provided financial support to encourage young artists, raised funds to purchase tickets for students, and established funds for solo performances by the concertmaster and first-chair members of the Orchestra. Volunteers have also contributed to the expansion of the orchestral repertoire by underwriting several commissions of new works for the Orchestra throughout the years.

The Village of Arts and Humanities

The mission of The Village of Arts and Humanities is to support the voices and aspirations of the community through providing opportunities for self-expression rooted in art and culture. The Village inspires people to be agents of positive change through programs that encompass arts and culture, engage youth, revitalize community, preserve heritage and respect the environment.

From the Village of Arts and Humanities website:

“As an organization and as individuals:

We value integrity, honesty, openness, personal excellence, constructive self-criticism, continual self-improvement and unwavering mutual respect.

We regard all the North Philadelphia community as our neighbors, partners, friends and colleagues.

We are committed to improving the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the people and the community as a whole.

We value art as a vehicle to create place, build self-esteem, and engender mutual respect. Art encompasses both the visual and performing arts as well as creativity in thinking, methodology and implementation.

We are committed to preserving the social and cultural heritage of the African American community in which we reside, while simultaneously fostering a sense of multiculturalism that reflects the needs of today’s culturally diverse community.

We embrace what society disdains and throws away, creating a new sense of possibility and hope in the community.

We believe that the strongest leadership is found within the community. Therefore, our programming supports and grows youth and adult residents into community leaders.”

Arts Sanctuary

Art Sanctuary, founded in North Philadelphia, uses the power of black art to transform individuals, unite groups of people, and enrich, and draw inspiration from the inner city. Board and staff members have worked hard for twelve years to create a learning culture adequate to support the mission.  We present, produce, commission, create, and teach artistic excellence. We hustle to pay for it. The art must be life-giving, not comfortable and happy-happy, but enriching to a community long hobbled by scarcity and injustice. Our work now is to keep advancing: with a new building, stronger infrastructure, and new technologies. For excellence in the arts. In the community. For real.

The Asian Arts Initiative

The Asian Arts Initiative is a community-based arts center in Philadelphia that engages artists and everyday people to create art that explores the diverse experiences of Asian Americans, addresses our social context, and imagines and effects positive community change. We are working toward a just and joyous world where all people, regardless of their racial and class backgrounds, are able to view and create art that reflects their lives and concerns.

Created in response to community concerns about racial tension, the Asian Arts Initiative began programming in May 1993 with Philadelphia’s first-ever Asian American Arts Festival: “Live Traditions/Contemporary Issues” at the Painted Bride Art Center. The Asian Arts Initiative has since become a community arts center that offers performances, exhibitions, workshops, and training for artists, youth and adults who share our commitment to community-based arts.
